Your morning routine is defence: antioxidants and sunscreen, holding the line against the day. Your evening routine is repair — and repair is where the look of dark spots actually changes. It only takes four steps.
Step 1 — Take the day off properly
Sunscreen, makeup and pollution do not fully rinse away with water. Start with a gentle cleanse, and if you wore SPF or makeup, cleanse twice: once to lift the products, once to clean the skin itself. Lukewarm water, fingertips, thirty seconds. If your face feels tight and squeaky afterwards, the cleanser is too strong — tightness is stripped barrier, and a stripped barrier makes more pigment, not less.
Step 2 — One brightening step, not four
At night, niacinamide is the workhorse for melanin-rich skin. It supports the barrier and helps keep excess pigment from settling, and it is famously well tolerated — you can use it every night without the irritation risk that comes with stronger actives.
Apply to slightly damp skin and give it a minute to absorb before the next step. One active is enough. Layering three brightening products does not triple the effect; it triples the chance of irritation, and irritation is the thing that darkens spots in the first place.
If you also use vitamin C, keep it in the morning. Both work at night too — splitting them across the day is simply the easiest way to avoid overloading skin. (And no, you do not have to keep them apart: see our niacinamide guide.)
Step 3 — Moisturise while damp
Moisturiser works best applied within a minute of the previous step, while there is still water on the skin to seal in. This is the step people treat as optional and it is the one that decides whether the active above it is comfortable enough to keep using.
Step 4 — Nothing
Genuinely. No scrub, no toner, no second serum, no picking at anything in the mirror. If you exfoliate, that is a 2–3×-a-week swap for step 2, not an addition to it — see how often to exfoliate.
The weekly shape
- Most nights: cleanse → niacinamide → moisturiser.
- Two nights: cleanse → gentle exfoliation → moisturiser (skip the active).
- One night, if skin feels sensitive: cleanse → moisturiser only. Rest days are part of the routine, not a failure of it.
Why this beats a bigger routine
Ten steps done inconsistently lose to four steps done nightly, every time. Skin changes on a 4–6-week renewal cycle — whatever you do has to be repeatable for that long to show up. Pick the routine you will still be doing in November.
The Brightening Set for Melanin-Rich Skin is built as exactly these steps in one box, and the Discovery Duo is the smaller way in if you would rather start with two products than four.
