When you're trying to fade dark spots, what you avoid matters as much as what you use — because the wrong ingredients can irritate melanin-rich skin and make pigmentation worse. Here's what to watch for.
1. Harsh bleaching agents
Steer clear of hydroquinone, mercury and steroids. These aggressive lighteners can cause rebound darkening, skin thinning, and (with hydroquinone) even permanent discoloration on deeper skin tones. More on hydroquinone safety here.
2. Anything that heavily irritates
On melanin-rich skin, irritation itself triggers dark spots. Be cautious with very high-strength acids or retinoids used too often, especially when starting — introduce actives slowly and patch-test.
3. Harsh physical scrubs
Rough, grainy scrubs used with heavy pressure create micro-irritation. Choose a gentle scrub and a light touch instead.
4. High alcohol & heavy fragrance (if you're sensitive)
These can dry out and irritate reactive skin. If your skin flares easily, look for gentler, fragrance-conscious formulas.
What to look for instead
Gentle, well-studied brighteners that work with your skin: Vitamin C, niacinamide, kojic acid and turmeric. They fade the appearance of dark spots without the risks above.
