If you've researched dark spots or hyperpigmentation, you've almost certainly come across hydroquinone — for decades the most common skin-lightening ingredient in the world. But is it safe? And why doesn't IYASA use it? Here's an honest look.
What is hydroquinone?
Hydroquinone reduces melanin production by blocking an enzyme called tyrosinase. It's effective at lightening skin — which is exactly why it became so popular. But 'effective at lightening' and 'safe for long-term use' are not the same thing.
The safety concerns
Hydroquinone is controversial for several reasons, and the concerns are often greater for melanin-rich skin:
- Ochronosis — with prolonged use, some people (disproportionately those with deeper skin tones) develop a bluish-black darkening of the skin that can be permanent — the opposite of the intended effect.
- Irritation — redness, stinging and dryness are common, and irritation on darker skin can itself trigger more pigmentation.
- Rebound darkening — spots can return darker once you stop.
- Regulatory scrutiny — several countries restrict or ban over-the-counter hydroquinone, and the US FDA has moved to pull unapproved OTC hydroquinone products from the market.
Used briefly under a dermatologist's supervision, hydroquinone has its place. But as a daily, long-term, buy-it-yourself ingredient — especially on melanin-rich skin — the risk is real.
Why we formulate without it
IYASA was built for melanin-rich skin, so 'gentle and safe enough for daily, long-term use' isn't optional — it's the whole point. Instead of hydroquinone, our formulas use well-studied brighteners that work with your skin: Vitamin C (brightens and evens tone), niacinamide (reduces the look of discoloration and strengthens the barrier), kojic acid (a naturally derived brightener), and turmeric (soothing and brightening).
Proof, not just promises
Every IYASA formula was independently tested by SGS (Report DA25-46207) and verified free of hydroquinone and mercury, with heavy metals and microbial safety within cosmetic standards. So 'no hydroquinone' isn't a marketing line — it's lab-confirmed.
