Why Dark Spots Keep Coming Back — and How to Break the Cycle

Fading the look of a dark spot and keeping it faded are two different jobs. Plenty of people do the first one well, stop, and watch the mark return within a couple of months. That is not bad luck and it is not your skin being stubborn — it is a maintenance problem with four common causes.

1. The trigger is still there

A mark is a record of something that happened: a spot you squeezed, a razor that dragged, a waistband that rubbed, a reaction to a product. If the trigger keeps repeating, so does the mark. Before changing products, ask what keeps causing the injury — friction, breakouts, shaving, or irritation from the routine itself.

2. Sun exposure quietly rewrites your progress

Melanin protects, but the cells that make it are also very responsive. Areas that have already made extra pigment are the first to make more when the sun hits them. A week of unprotected daylight can undo a month of careful work. Daily SPF is not a summer product — it is the maintenance step for anyone working on tone.

3. The routine stopped

Skin turns over continuously, which means the surface is always being replaced. Brightening steps like vitamin C and niacinamide work on the cells being made now, not the ones already gone. Stop entirely and new pigment is no longer being kept in check.

You usually do not need to stay on a full intensive routine forever — but you do need to keep the gentle cleanse, one brightening step and daily SPF running.

4. The routine was too harsh to begin with

This is the cruel one. Aggressive scrubs, high-strength acids used daily, and lightening creams with harsh agents can make an area look lighter fast and then rebound darker — because the irritation itself signals the skin to produce more pigment. If your marks came back darker than they started, this is very often why. Our guide to ingredients to avoid covers what to walk away from.

The maintenance routine

  • Morning: gentle cleanse, vitamin C, moisturiser, SPF.
  • Evening: gentle cleanse, niacinamide, moisturiser.
  • Weekly: gentle exfoliation 2–3×, never more — see how often to exfoliate melanin-rich skin.
  • Always: hands off new breakouts.

The short version

Dark spots come back when the cause is still running, the sun is unblocked, the routine stopped, or the routine was too harsh. Fix the cause and keep a gentle maintenance routine going, and the look of your tone holds.

Building one from scratch is the hard part. The Even Tone Protocol is our routine for exactly this: fade the look of existing marks, then keep them from settling back in. The 60-second quiz will point you to the right one for your skin.
